Located a short ten minute drive from the  Simple-Life Village at Flat Rock is the quaint and very historic village of Flat Rock in Henderson County. It’s home to the fascinating Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Connemara, Flat Rock Playhouse and some local shops, galleries and restaurants.

Flat Rock dates back to a time when the Cherokee met on the great flat rock which is still visible today. Flat Rock was established about 1807 and became the “Little Charleston of the Mountains” with summer homes to escape the heat. Many of those historic homes are now on the National Register of Historic Places.

10 minutes from The Village at Flat Rock

Flat Rock Playhouse is officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina. They present a stellar line-up of shows since they are a Professional Equity Theatre. It’s just 30 minutes from Asheville in the village of Flat Rock near Hendersonville. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now year-long season of productions including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama and concerts.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
This fascinating site honors the accomplishments of Carl Sandburg and wife Lilian. It was designated as a National Historic Site in 1968 (part of the US National Park Service) to honor Sandburg’s massive collection of stories about the American people’s plights, struggles, joys and hopes. Wife Lilian has a fantastic story of her own, breeding and milking her prize-winning goats. It’s free to explore the grounds, but there is small fee for a guided house tour.

Downtown Hendersonville has the second largest downtown in western North Carolina (Asheville is the biggest) with many things to do, see and taste. Beautiful Main Street serpentines around planter boxes and lush landscaping. With more than 100 shops and 25 restaurants, it is a delight to explore the big variety of locally-owned, high-quality stores and galleries. And see their famous painted bears!
